Sparta

Where is Sparta and how the city of the ancient Spartans, Leonidas, Lycurgus and the brave warriors who offered their bodies instead of walls, looks today?
Modern Sparta is located in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese. To the west of the city, rises Mount Taygetos with its towering peaks and wild beauty, while to the east, is the verdant mountain range of Parnon. Between those mountains flows the mythical river Evrotas and along its west bank extends the city of Sparta.

The establishment of modern Sparta, goes back to 1834, King Otto, ordered the urban plan of the city which was to the Bavarian architect Stauffert, according to the Hippodameion residential system. Thanks to the plans of Stauffert, Sparta is today a city with straight , wide streets and large squares that retains its original characteristics to a large extent. It is also distinguished for its many elegant neoclassical buildings that give Sparta a special charm. These characteristics make you feel that you are in a city that is elegant and friendly to the visitor no matter what season you are visiting it.

The two main streets that intersect in the city center are Konstantinos Paleologos Avenue and Lykourgos Avenue. A special place in the social and everyday life of the city, is the large central square with the imposing old town hall, an exceptional neoclassical building of 1909. Opposite to the town hall you can admire the statue of the Spartan warrior, a tribute to the glorious history of the city and two copies of ancient mosaics that are placed in the center. Around the main square there are many cafes, bars and restaurants while under the picturesque arches there are many commercial shops.
