Church of Saint Nikon

The majestic church of Saint Nikon, patron saint of the city of Sparta, which is the point of reference for the inhabitants of the city and the prefecture of Laconia.
It was founded in 1929 with designs by Anastasios Orlandos and was inaugurated in 1955.
The church is decorated with paintings created by Evangelos Mavrikakis from 1959 to 1963. Mavrikakis was a student of the great painter Fotis Kontoglou and became one of the most productive painters of modern times with many works in churches of the Peloponnese. The memory of Saint Nikon is celebrated with great splendor in the city of Sparta on November 26.
