It was built by the Spartans, at the time when Augustus (late 1st century BC) granted them Kardamili as a port. The bridge used to connect ancient Sparta with Kardamili via the Roman road. It was named by the Christians "Helliniko" (Greek), meaning work of the ancient Greeks, while the locals call it "Kamara".
