Kaiadas

Outside the village of Trypi, on the road to Kalamata, you can visit the cavern of Kaiadas.
According to tradition, the ancient Spartans threw disabled or cachectic infants in order to ensure the eugenics of their race. However, historical research has shown that Kaiadas was probably thrown to death row inmates, traitors and prisoners of war.

This fact seems to be confirmed since a large number of human bones have been found inside Kaiadas, which belong mainly to adult men. It is believed that the cave was used by the Spartans, mainly during the Messinian wars (8th - 5th century BC) to condemn to death the enemies of Sparta. Kaiadas is about 50 m deep and its current entrance is about 30 m above the road.
